The Case of the Libidinous Labor Organization
A well-known university renegotiated a labor contract with its Portuguese workers. We were asked to translate the contract changes and insert them into the original contract translated by the university's former translation service. We discovered in the old contract that the sentence, "The university recognizes the union as sole bargaining agent," had been translated into Portuguese as "The university recognizes copulation as the sole haggling agent."
This embarrassing mistake committed by the university's former translator highlights another lesson: good translation is not done word for word. It is done in context, with a comprehension of the text being translated. This level of translation requires experienced translators with excellent writing skills.
